Highway 28 Upgrade

Project Location: City of Cold Lake, Alberta

The project consisted of the upgrading and widening of Highway 28 between 52 Street and 54 Avenue in the City of Cold Lake, Alberta. The overall length of the alignment was approximately 960 m and included two major and two minor traffic control intersections. The project also involved widening of the roadway alignment to include additional turning lanes and the installation of new underground utilities. The scope of work completed by SolidEarth included undertaking a geotechnical investigation and environmental screening and testing, as well as full-time materials testing during construction.

The geotechnical investigation assessed the subsurface soil and groundwater conditions at selected locations along the proposed alignment, and provided geotechnical recommendations for subgrade preparation and pavement structure requirements. The geotechnical investigation included drilling boreholes, conducting laboratory review and testing on recovered soil samples, analyzing traffic data and forecasted traffic loading over the design period, and establishing the required minimum pavement structure.

The materials testing portion of this project included compaction testing during the installation of underground utilities and during the reconstruction of the highway subgrade; concrete sampling and testing during paving operations for curbs and sidewalks, and for hand-placed concrete pours; asphalt sampling and testing during asphalt paving operations; environmental sampling and testing when contaminated soils were encountered; engineering support during proof rolls and when problematic soil conditions were encountered; and all associated laboratory testing.
