Highway 16 Upgrade

Project Location: City of Lloydminster, Alberta

The project consisted of upgrading the existing roadway and infrastructure of Highway 16 between 62 Avenue and 75 Avenue in the City of Lloydminster, Alberta. The overall length of the alignment was approximately 1.4 km and included major traffic control intersections. The project also involved widening of the roadway alignment to include additional turning lanes.

The scope of work completed by SolidEarth included:
• Completing a pavement condition assessment (smoothness, raveling, potholes, rutting, cracking, etc.).
• Drilling boreholes along the project alignment, conducting laboratory review and testing on recovered soil samples, and assessing the pavement and subsurface conditions.
• Completing GPR survey of each lane along the project alignment to assess the thickness of the various layers.
• Reviewing traffic data and forecasted traffic loading over the design life, and evaluating various rehabilitation options and life expectancies.

Rehabilitation options evaluated, included: mill, inlay, and overlay; complete rebuild with sub-base and cement stabilization options; and Portland cement concrete pads at the intersection deceleration lanes. The applicability of each option and their anticipated life expectancy were analyzed and discussed with the project team. Engineering evaluation also included recommendations for pavement structures and Portland cement rigid pavement pads at major intersections.
